Direct imaging of Titan’s extended haze layer from HST observations

چکیده
[1] In the early 1980s, both Voyager spacecraft imaged a detached haze layer surrounding Titan, separated from the main haze distribution by a gap at around 300 km and merging into a hood of more concentrated haze at Titan’s north pole. We have processed Hubble Space Telescope images of Titan with Lucy-Richardson and PIXON deconvolution software and point spread functions generated by TinyTim 6.0 to detect the extended haze layer for the first time since the Voyager encounters. Images taken from 1994 through 2000 show not only that the extended haze layer still exists, but also that it has migrated from south to north during that interval.

Seasonal change in Titan’s haze 1992–2002 from Hubble Space Telescope observations
[1] Images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) document the seasonal migration of haze in Titan’s atmosphere. Image profiles show darkening of the north relative to the south at 439 nm (blue) but no change at 619 nm. The limb profile at 889 nm has inverted, becoming north-bright, a variation consistent with haze transport towards the winter hemisphere by winds. The complex altitude-time varia...

متن کاملFlight through Titan’s Atmosphere
We assembled spectral image datacubes of Titan in H-band (1.4131.808 μm), using adaptive optics on the 10-m W.M. Keck telescope, by stepping a spectrometer slit across Titan’s disk. We constructed images of Titan at each wavelength by ‘glueing’ the spectra together, producing 1400ultra-narrowband (~0.1nm) views of the satellite. With this method one can characterise Titan’s atmosphere over the ...
متن کاملTitan’s haze structure in 1999 from spatially-resolved narrowband imaging surrounding the 0.94 Mm methane window
[1] We use narrowband images of Titan obtained in November 1999 to explore the haze vertical structure in Titan’s lower atmosphere. The images were taken with the MountWilson 2.54m telescope using the NASA/GSFC-built Acousto-Optic Imaging Spectrometer. These images were recorded at five wavelengths surrounding the 0.94 mm methane window and are sensitive to a range of altitudes in Titan’s lower...
متن کاملTitan’s 2 Mm surface albedo and haze optical depth in 1996--2004
[1] We observed Titan in 1996–2004 with high-resolution 2 mm speckle and adaptive optics imaging at the W. M. Keck Observatory. By observing in a 2 mm broadband filter we obtain images that have contributions from both Titan’s surface and atmosphere. We have modeled Titan’s atmosphere using a plane-parallel radiative transfer code that has been corrected to agree with 3-D Monte Carlo prediction...
